where we started
In France, no construction project gets built without passing through the Séquence ERC — the mitigation hierarchy that requires developers to avoid (Éviter), reduce (Réduire), and finally compensate (Compenser) for their impact on biodiversity. Compensation is the last step, and one of the hardest: someone has to find land where a restoration project will actually work.
For years, that meant driving around looking at fields. We built the tool that replaced the drive. It identifies qualifying sites directly, scoring each one on additionality, biodiversity equivalence, and territorial coherence — the three criteria regulators actually care about.
where we are now
Once that tool proved itself, we went back up the chain. We took an AI-first approach to avoidance and built a pre-diagnostic module that gives clients a grounded biodiversity risk opinion for any site — whatever the project, wherever it is in France. We're now building the reduction layer: helping clients select the right mitigation measures, and assembling all of it into a complete environmental impact report.
why it matters
The rules protecting biodiversity in France are good rules. They're also the ones most likely to stall a project, or to get quietly worked around. We think the fix isn't weaker regulation — it's compliance that's fast enough and rigorous enough that developers stop treating it as an obstacle. That's the balance we're building toward.
The co-founders Luc and Martin met during an entrepreneurship program called Antler in Paris. Their complimentary backgrounds and impact-driven entrepreneurial spirit were a perfect match to work together. Two years in, we've gone from 2 clients to more than 20. Growing that fast taught us a lot — about the product, about the market, and about what our clients actually need from us. Each cycle made the platform sharper and the service better.
We've now raised our first round to accelerate. The next chapter is about three things: growing sales, building the team that can handle the volume that comes with it, and unifying everything we've built into a single product that takes a client's project from A to Z.
That's where you come in.
We’re hiring a Senior Software Engineer to take technical ownership of Versant’s AI systems.
We have built production pipelines that combine structured geospatial data with evidence retrieved from thousands of ecological and regulatory documents. These systems help our team and clients answer complex questions that would otherwise require weeks of expert investigation. The foundations are working and already delivering value; your role is to take them to the next level of rigor, reliability, and capability.
You’ll own problems such as retrieval quality, grounding and traceability, evaluation, observability, latency, and failure recovery. You’ll also explore where tool-using and agentic systems can improve the broader Versant platform—and, just as importantly, where simpler deterministic approaches are the better engineering choice.
This role is for an engineer who wants difficult technical work, a high degree of ownership, and the opportunity to apply excellent software engineering to a consequential problem: protecting biodiversity while enabling critical infrastructure to be built responsibly.
